In the quiet neighborhood of Taylor Berry in Louisville, Kentucky, the life of 58-year-old James Russell, a Black male, was tragically cut short on the evening of December 27, 2020. Responding to a call around 8 p.m., officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department arrived at a residence on Lindbergh Drive to a grim discovery. Inside the home, they found Russell, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation by the LMPD's
Homicide Unit did not immediately yield information about a potential suspect. However, detectives began the meticulous process of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their efforts soon focused on a young man who would become the primary suspect in the case. Through diligent police work, which included witness interviews and the analysis of ballistics evidence, a clear picture of the alleged perpetrator began to emerge.
The investigation culminated in the arrest of 18-year-old Fredrick R. Rodgers. A significant breakthrough in the case came from two witnesses who were present during the incident. They reported to the police that Rodgers had also fired at them shortly after shooting Russell, though neither was injured as Rodgers fled the house. Crucially, one of these witnesses had a personal acquaintance with Rodgers and was able to positively identify him to the detectives. This eyewitness testimony, combined with the forensic evidence, led to Rodgers being charged with murder in connection with James Russell's death. He was apprehended without incident and taken into custody.
