In the spring of 2021, the life of 14-year-old Darrin Alexander Thiele III was violently cut short in his Louisville, Kentucky, neighborhood. A White male freshman at Butler Traditional High School, Darrin was known for his love of sports, especially basketball and football. He was a familiar and welcome presence in his St. Denis community, often seen playing outside with other kids his age.
Darrin, who was looking forward to his 15th birthday in May, was the son of Jamie Leigh Hatfield and Darrin Alexander Thiele Jr., and a brother to two younger sisters. His aunt, Lacy Hatfield, who helped raise him, remembered him as a son.
On the afternoon of April 14, 2021, Darrin was on Trumpet Way with a group of teenagers whom witnesses believed were his friends. An argument broke out among the youths, and the dispute tragically escalated when one of them pulled out a handgun. The teen shot Darrin in the back of the head, and the group scattered, leaving him on a neighbor’s lawn. He was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition but did not survive his injuries. The community was left in shock, holding a vigil and creating a memorial of flowers and messages where he fell.
The Louisville Metro Police Department investigated the homicide. Five months later, in September 2021, authorities arrested another 14-year-old, Chance Guthrie, in connection with the shooting. Guthrie was charged with murder and, despite his age, was ordered to be tried as an adult.
In 2022, a court convicted Guthrie of manslaughter for Darrin's death. He received a sentence of six-and-a-half years. After serving time in both juvenile and adult facilities, Guthrie was released in late 2025. The case is considered solved, with the last update on its resolution reported in August 2026. For Darrin's family, the legal proceedings brought a conclusion, but could not heal the wound of his sudden loss. His aunt, Brandi Beckman, reflected on the tragedy, saying Darrin “deserves justice because he should still be here.”
