In the autumn of 2021, the life of 19-year-old Demone Lee Cook Jr. was tragically cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. On the evening of October 27th, in the Portland neighborhood, a violent encounter unfolded that would leave one young man dead and a woman seriously injured. The incident, a double shooting, occurred in the 3400 block of Northwestern Parkway. When Louisville Metro Police officers arrived at the scene around 6:18 p.m., they found Demone Lee Cook Jr. deceased from his injuries.
The female victim was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital in serious condition.
Witnesses at the scene quickly identified a suspect who was seen speeding away from the area in a car. This led to a police pursuit that ended on Greenwood Avenue, where the suspect abandoned his vehicle and fled into an apartment. The man, identified as 20-year-old Jeffrey Lyn Demarco Acres, was apprehended by the authorities. A search of his vehicle uncovered two handguns, one of which was reported stolen, along with shell casings and marijuana.
During a statement to the police, Acres admitted to being at the location of the shooting with the intention of selling marijuana to the victim. Following his arrest, Jeffrey Lyn Demarco Acres faced a litany of charges, including murder, first-degree assault, fleeing or evading police, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property, and trafficking in marijuana. The death of Demone Lee Cook Jr., a father to a young son, sent ripples of grief through his family and the wider Louisville community.
