On a Tuesday in late December 2021, the life of 20-year-old Terrance R. Barton was tragically cut short in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The male victim was discovered in the driver's seat of his white car after it had collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Nashville Road and Emmett Avenue. Responding to calls of shots fired, Bowling Green Police found Barton suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite life-saving efforts by the officers at the scene, he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting began immediately, with police canvassing the area near the gas station parking lot on Nashville Road where the incident occurred. Witnesses at the scene described a man fleeing on foot after the gunshots rang out. A short time later, officers located 19-year-old Kamonte E. Grissom walking nearby. His appearance, including his clothing and the backpack he was carrying, matched the description provided by witnesses.
Grissom was taken to the Bowling Green Police Department for questioning, where he confessed to his involvement in the shooting. He admitted to arranging a meeting with Barton under the pretense of purchasing $1,200 worth of marijuana. However, Grissom's actual intention was to rob Barton, and he arrived at their meeting spot armed with a handgun. He fired his weapon until it jammed and then fled the scene, hiding the gun in a nearby backyard, which police were later able to recover.
Following his confession, Kamonte E. Grissom was arrested and lodged at the Warren County Regional Jail. He faced multiple charges, including murder, first-degree robbery, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Subsequently, Grissom pleaded guilty to the charges against him. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of Terrance Barton.
