In the pre-dawn hours of February 22, 2022, a violent intrusion shattered the peace of a Richmond, Kentucky home, ending the life of 32-year-old Jordan Wesley Morgan, a female attorney with a promising future. An armed man, identified as Shannon Gilday, forced his way into the expansive residence owned by Jordan's father, former state representative C. Wesley Morgan.
Gilday proceeded to an upstairs bedroom where he shot Jordan multiple times as she lay in her bed.
After fatally wounding Jordan, Gilday encountered her father, and the two exchanged gunfire. C. Wesley Morgan was wounded in the shootout but survived his injuries. The intruder then fled the scene, sparking a week-long manhunt. The investigation revealed that Gilday, then 23, was a resident of Taylor Mill and had no prior connection to the Morgan family. His motive was reportedly an obsessive fear of nuclear war; he had targeted the Morgan home specifically to gain access to a large underground bunker on the property. Evidence showed he had conducted extensive research on the home and the family's routines.
Following a public plea from his own mother, who noted her son's deteriorating mental health, Shannon Gilday was apprehended by a sheriff's deputy in Madison County on February 28, 2022, not far from the scene of the crime. Authorities believe he had returned with the intent to again try and access the home. After his arrest, Gilday confessed to the murder. He was subsequently charged with murder, three counts of attempted murder, assault, burglary, and criminal mischief. His defense has raised issues regarding his mental state, with psychological evaluations suggesting a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. The case is proceeding toward a trial scheduled for May 2025, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty, a measure strongly supported by Jordan Morgan's grieving family.
