In the early summer evening of June 5, 2022, Jordin Barnes, a 29-year-old male, was riding his bicycle near a parking lot in the 4500 block of Dixie Highway in Shively, Kentucky. His life was cut short when he was fatally shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
The events that led to the shooting reportedly began with a seemingly innocuous request. A juvenile who was with 18-year-old Javontae Moore and another individual in a Honda Civic asked Barnes to purchase a cigar for him from a nearby liquor store. Following this, a conversation about buying pills reportedly took place between Moore and Barnes. It was during this interaction that Moore, who was a passenger in the vehicle, shot Barnes.
Shively Police launched an investigation and were able to utilize surveillance video to identify the suspects' vehicle, a Honda Civic with a distinctive spare tire on the front passenger side. The license plate led them to an address where they observed Moore and two other males, including a juvenile, exiting the same vehicle.
Just ten days after the fatal shooting, on June 15, 2022, Javontae Moore was arrested and charged with complicity to murder. Another juvenile was also taken into custody in connection with the crime. Moore and the juvenile were also implicated in an unrelated armed carjacking that had occurred on May 31. Subsequently, Javontae Moore pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter for his role in the death of Jordin Barnes.
