In the pre-dawn hours of August 31, 2010, the quiet of rural Lake Crystal, Minnesota, was broken by a frantic 911 call from Jennifer Nibbe. She told the dispatcher that an intruder, his head covered by a nylon stocking, had broken into her home, shot her 26-year-old husband, James Mervin Nibbe, a White male, and then attacked her before fleeing. When police arrived, they found James, an apprentice electrician, dead in his bed from a single gunshot wound to the back of his head. Jennifer claimed she was in the bathroom when she heard the shot and was then confronted by the attacker, who she said dragged her into the living room, cut her thighs with a knife, and attempted to tie her up before being scared off by the family dog.
However, investigators immediately grew suspicious of her account. Despite recent rainfall, there were no unidentified footprints or tire tracks on the property. There were no signs of a forced entry, and nothing had been stolen from the home. The murder weapon was a shotgun James had recently gifted to his wife, and a knife and rope found at the scene also belonged to the couple. Jennifer's story also had inconsistencies; she first told an officer she was in the shower when she heard the shot, then later said she was brushing her teeth.
The investigation soon uncovered a web of secrets in Jennifer's life. The couple was experiencing severe financial distress, and Jennifer, a nurse, was the primary breadwinner, a fact that caused her frustration. This financial strain was largely due to her hidden, severe addiction to opioids, which led her to forge prescriptions and consume up to 180 painkillers a week. Detectives also discovered that just two months before the murder, Jennifer had taken out a life insurance policy on her husband. Her personal journal revealed she was bored and unhappy in her marriage, despite writing that James was a good man, and she had reconnected with an ex-boyfriend.
A few days after James's funeral, Jennifer Nibbe was arrested on September 10, 2010, and charged with her husband's murder. In police custody, she eventually confessed, admitting there was no intruder and that she had staged the scene. She claimed that she woke up in a panic at 5:30 a.m., retrieved the shotgun, loaded a single shell, and shot her husband as he slept. During her trial, her defense attorneys argued she suffered from PTSD due to alleged physical and sexual abuse by James, though she had never mentioned this to anyone prior to her arrest. Following a plea deal in July 2012, Jennifer Nibbe pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to prison. The family of James Nibbe later filed a successful wrongful death lawsuit against her.
