On October 30, 2011, 21-year-old Francisco Hernandez was fatally shot during a Halloween party in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The incident occurred at an apartment on the 3000 block of Pleasant Avenue South, where a gathering of approximately ten adults and several children was underway. Hernandez, a father of three young children, was among the attendees.
The tragic event unfolded when Felix Hernandez-Pedraza, aged 26, arrived at the party, reportedly invited by an ex-girlfriend who was also present. Witnesses indicated that Hernandez-Pedraza became upset upon seeing his ex-girlfriend conversing with Francisco Hernandez. A confrontation ensued, during which Hernandez-Pedraza drew a handgun and shot Francisco Hernandez four times in the chest, resulting in his immediate death. A fifth shot injured another man in the shoulder, who was subsequently treated at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Following the shooting, Hernandez-Pedraza fled the scene but was apprehended by Minneapolis police near the intersection of Pillsbury Avenue and Lake Street. At the time of his arrest, he was found to have non-life-threatening stab wounds and was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. He was later charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree attempted murder. If convicted on both counts, Hernandez-Pedraza faced up to 60 years in prison.
