Devonte Rashawn Coppage, aged 22, was fatally shot on January 3, 2014, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Coppage, a college student and father of a young son, was attempting to purchase marijuana outside a gas station at White Bear and Maryland avenues when the incident occurred. According to a criminal complaint, Coppage had arranged the drug buy over the phone and was accompanied by his brother to the gas station.
Coppage entered the back seat of a car with three young men inside, while his brother waited nearby. Shortly after, multiple gunshots were heard, and Coppage was found lying in the parking lot.
The Ramsey County attorney's office charged Antonio Ray Seals, an 18-year-old from Saint Paul, with unintentional second-degree murder. Seals was also injured during the incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to his arm. Initially, Seals claimed that Coppage had shot him first, but a homicide investigator determined that the bullet in Seals' arm indicated he had shot himself. Police recovered a. 22-caliber handgun, two sandwich baggies containing 24.7 grams of marijuana, and blood evidence at the scene.
In addition to Antonio Seals, two other individuals were arrested in connection with the shooting. Alfonso Ray Seals, aged 21, and Derrick Anthony Parker, also 21, were taken into custody at Regions Hospital after arriving in a car at high speed. The bullet that injured Antonio Seals was believed to have come from a. 38-caliber handgun, which was later recovered. The investigation revealed that Coppage had shown his brother a handgun on New Year's Eve, but had left it with someone else before the fatal encounter.
