On a winter afternoon, January 6, 2014, the life of 18-year-old Kayla Jill Koranda, a female college freshman, was tragically cut short in what authorities would later describe as a murder-suicide. The incident unfolded in a heated pole shed on a property in New Haven Township, near Pine Island, Minnesota. Kayla, a graduate of Lourdes High School in Rochester and a liberal arts student at the University of Minnesota, had gone to visit a high school friend, 19-year-old Nicholas Bryan Roecker.
The two had been classmates at Lourdes High School, and while the full extent of their relationship wasn't publicly known, they were believed to be just friends. Authorities suggest that Roecker, a student at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, was struggling with depression, and Kayla had gone to his family's home to support him. It was Roecker's father who discovered the tragic scene in the shed and called 911. When deputies from the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office and medical personnel arrived, they found Kayla deceased from a gunshot wound.
Nicholas Roecker was found clinging to life with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a Mayo Clinic hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Investigators recovered a handgun at the scene and, based on the location of the wounds, concluded that Roecker had shot and killed Kayla before turning the gun on himself. The investigation, conducted by the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, did not point to any kind of suicide pact. No arrests were made as the perpetrator was deceased, leaving two families and a community to grieve the sudden and devastating loss of two young lives.
