On a winter afternoon, January 6, 2014, the life of 18-year-old Kayla Jill Koranda, a female college freshman, was tragically cut short in what authorities would later describe as a murder-suicide. The incident unfolded in a heated pole shed on a property in New Haven Township, near Pine Island, Minnesota. Kayla, a graduate of Lourdes High School in Rochester and a liberal arts student at the University of Minnesota, had gone to visit a high school friend, 19-year-old Nicholas Bryan Roecker.
