In the quiet Minneapolis suburb of Apple Valley, the holiday season of 2014 held a dark and tragic secret that would not be discovered for several weeks. Five-year-old Raniya Rani Crowley, a young girl, was found deceased in her home on January 17, 2015, alongside her parents, 29-year-old David Crowley and 28-year-old Komel Crowley. The family had not been seen or heard from since late December, prompting a neighbor to check on their welfare, leading to the grim discovery.
Investigators determined that the deaths had occurred weeks earlier, around December 26, 2014.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Raniya and her mother, Komel, both died from gunshot wounds to the head, and their deaths were ruled homicides. David Crowley also died from a gunshot wound to the head, which was ruled a suicide. Authorities concluded that David Crowley was the sole suspect, having murdered his wife and daughter before taking his own life in a shocking act of domestic violence. A handgun was found next to his body at the scene.
The investigation painted a disturbing picture of the family's final days. David Crowley, an independent filmmaker and military veteran, had reportedly become increasingly isolated. Friends and family noted his withdrawal in the months leading up to the tragedy. He was in the process of creating a film titled "Gray State," which depicted a dystopian future, and some who knew him said he had become despondent as the project lost momentum. The crime scene itself contained unsettling elements, including messages written in blood on the walls. Police found no signs of a struggle or forced entry into the home. The investigation concluded that David Crowley acted alone and the case was closed.
