In the quiet community of Aitkin, Minnesota, the life of 14-year-old Dawson Nando VanPortfliet, a White male, was tragically cut short on May 31, 2015. The young man, who was just finishing the eighth grade at Aitkin High School, was a beloved son, brother, and friend with a passion for life. He was an active Boy Scout, on the cusp of achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, with only three merit badges left to earn.
His interests were varied and included martial arts, longboarding, camping, and the outdoors. He also had a creative side, enjoying writing, drawing, and teaching himself to play the guitar. Known for his helpful nature, he was adept at solving computer problems and had recently started his first job as a dishwasher at a local restaurant where his father also worked.
On that fateful spring evening, a devastating accident occurred at his family's residence. His father, Dennis VanPortfliet, 37, was cleaning his. 40-caliber handgun when it unintentionally discharged. The single bullet struck Dawson, inflicting a mortal wound. Emergency responders arrived to find resuscitation efforts already in progress, and the young teen was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis for urgent care. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Dawson succumbed to his injuries a few days later on June 4, 2015.
The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident, recovering the firearm involved. While the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office ruled the death a homicide, authorities stated their belief that the shooting was an unintentional and tragic accident. The case was to remain under investigation to determine if any charges would be filed against his father. The community mourned the loss of a bright and promising young man, holding a candlelight vigil and offering support to the grieving VanPortfliet family.
