On December 30, 2022, 26-year-old Jeremy Demond Ellis was found dead in a white Dodge Charger near the intersection of South Sixth Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, MN. The incident occurred around 9 p.m., and Ellis was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that Ellis died from these gunshot wounds.
The suspect in this case, Idris Adbillahi Haji-Mohamed, a 28-year-old from
Rochester, MN, was apprehended shortly after the incident. Witnesses provided a description of the shooter, which led officers to Haji-Mohamed, who was seen leaving a nearby apartment building. Haji-Mohamed was identified as the registered owner of the Dodge Charger where Ellis was found.
During the investigation, Haji-Mohamed admitted to being involved in a drug deal with Ellis. He claimed that Ellis ordered him out of the car at gunpoint and began driving away, prompting Haji-Mohamed to fire several shots at him. Haji-Mohamed then changed his clothes and handed them, along with the gun used in the shooting, to a friend. These items were later recovered by the police from a car in the apartment building's garage.
Haji-Mohamed was formally charged with second-degree intentional murder. It was also revealed that he was on conditional release with an ankle bracelet for a previous murder charge in Clay County, stemming from a September 10, 2021, shooting in Moorhead that resulted in the death of 32-year-old Abdi Abdi.
