On the evening of March 9, 2018, police in Saint Paul, Minnesota, responded to a call on Cottage Avenue East. Inside the residence, they discovered 18-year-old Hispanic female Eileen Viveros-Vargas with a gunshot wound to the head. Her 19-year-old boyfriend, Luis Isaac Chacon-Villeda, was performing CPR when officers arrived. Paramedics pronounced Viveros-Vargas dead at the scene.
At the time of her death, Viveros-Vargas was five months pregnant with a boy, and the unborn child did not survive.
Investigators found marijuana, a. 22 caliber handgun, a scale, and several thousand dollars in cash in the bedroom where Viveros-Vargas was found. Chacon-Villeda, who had been in a relationship with Viveros-Vargas for two years and lived with her, was arrested. He admitted to owning the marijuana and the handgun and to selling drugs in the neighborhood. He was initially charged with drug possession while the homicide investigation continued.
Chacon-Villeda was considered a suspect in the death of Viveros-Vargas. Friends and family of Viveros-Vargas expressed their shock and grief, remembering her as an outgoing and caring person who was looking forward to motherhood and studying cosmetology. The investigation into her death was ongoing as authorities worked to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
