In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Minneapolis, a physical altercation between two individuals escalated tragically, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a young life. Shanontae Shawon-Lee Fisher, a 17-year-old Black or African American male from Hopkins, was fatally shot on May 20, 2020. The incident occurred around 12:25 a.m. outside a residence on the 2900 block of North Girard Avenue.
Responding officers arrived at the scene to find Fisher with a gunshot wound.
They administered aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. Despite their efforts, Shanontae Shawon-Lee Fisher succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital just before 1 a.m.
A preliminary investigation suggested that Fisher and his assailant were acquainted and had been involved in a physical fight that culminated in the fatal shooting. Immediately following the incident, the shooter fled the scene. Law enforcement officials at the time indicated they were working on a description of the suspect, but the individual remained at large.
Investigators from the homicide unit and crime lab personnel processed the scene and interviewed several people in an effort to piece together the events that led to the teenager's death. However, despite these initial efforts, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the killing of Shanontae Shawon-Lee Fisher. The case is one of many homicides from that year in Minneapolis that have left a family and community searching for answers and justice.
