In the early morning hours of June 21, 2020, a violent encounter in a suburban Minneapolis parking lot cut short the life of 27-year-old Shateke Jamal Bruce, a Black / African American male. The incident unfolded around 2:10 a.m. outside Big Louie's Bar and Grill in Crystal, Minnesota. A 911 call reported a shooting, and when officers arrived at the 5200 block of West Broadway Avenue, they found Bruce suffering from numerous gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services rushed him to North
Memorial Health Hospital in nearby Robbinsdale. Despite their efforts, Shateke Jamal Bruce succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately 7:48 a.m. that same morning. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later officially confirmed his identity.
Witnesses at the scene provided a crucial piece of information to the Crystal Police Department, reporting a white SUV speeding away from the area immediately after the shots were fired. Investigators were later able to recover the vehicle, but this did not lead to an immediate breakthrough in the case. As of the latest available reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
The investigation into Bruce's death was further complicated by another shooting incident that occurred at the very same location the following night. In that event, two men were discovered with non-critical gunshot wounds, and a third man later arrived at a hospital with similar injuries. Authorities have expressed suspicion that the two shootings may be related. The Crystal Police Department has continued to appeal to the public for any information that might help them solve the case and bring those responsible for Shateke Jamal Bruce's death to justice.
