On the evening of February 23, 2021, Raymond Renteria Hobbs, a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the St. Paul Saloon in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Earlier in the evening, Renteria Hobbs had entered the saloon and greeted several people. His presence was reportedly monitored by Andrew Vernard Glover, a 38-year-old man who had arrived in a silver Dodge Journey with another individual.
Glover was seen engaging in conversation with
Renteria Hobbs, both inside the bar and on the patio. The situation escalated when Renteria Hobbs followed Glover and his companion, a man wearing a Chicago White Sox hat, out into the parking lot. As Renteria Hobbs approached the driver's side of Glover's vehicle, and the other man went to the passenger side, gunfire erupted. A 26-year-old woman who was with them hid behind a truck during the shooting.
Raymond Renteria Hobbs was struck by ten bullets. Despite his severe injuries, he managed to run back towards the bar, where he collapsed in the vestibule. A handgun he had been carrying, which was later found to be inoperable, fell to the ground. Emergency services were called, and Renteria Hobbs was transported to Regions Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The 26-year-old woman was also shot, suffering a wound to her liver and fractured ribs, but she survived.
Andrew Vernard Glover was arrested two days after the shooting, recognized in part by the "Snoopy" sweatshirt he was wearing, which was visible on the bar's security footage. Initially, Glover denied his involvement, claiming he was alone at the bar and drove away when he heard gunshots. However, he later admitted to interacting with Renteria Hobbs, stating they had gone to the patio to smoke and that Renteria Hobbs had wanted to buy cocaine from him. The motive for the shooting is believed to have been a dispute over a rumored stolen gun.
Ultimately, a jury found Andrew Vernard Glover guilty of intentional first-degree and second-degree murder, illegal weapons possession, and two counts of dangerous weapon drive-by shooting. He was acquitted of the charge of first-degree premeditated murder. Glover has a significant criminal history with at least 14 prior convictions. For the murder of Raymond Renteria Hobbs, he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
