Faisal A. Abukar, aged 33, from Saint Paul, MN, tragically lost his life on December 18, 2021. The incident occurred at a Marathon gas station located near the Twin Cities Premium Outlets in Eagan, Minnesota. According to reports, Abukar was shot in the head during an altercation that took place around 7 p.m. on December 18. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The suspect in this case, Sakaria Osman Ahmed, aged 31 at
the time, was identified and apprehended shortly after the incident. Witnesses described seeing a Somali man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and dark pants fleeing the scene towards a nearby outlet mall. Ahmed was arrested within minutes and found to be in possession of a loaded 9-millimeter handgun. Surveillance footage from the gas station revealed that the altercation began when two cars pulled up next to each other, and a scuffle ensued between the occupants of the vehicles.
Ahmed was charged with second-degree murder by the Minnesota District Court of Dakota County. The criminal complaint detailed that the altercation started over a verbal argument about the position of a seat inside one of the vehicles. The situation escalated when the driver of the sedan, identified as Ahmed, exited his vehicle and shot Abukar once in the head. Ahmed's bail was set at $1,500,000 without conditions, or $750,000 with conditions, by Dakota County District Court Judge Christopher Lehman.
In July 2023, Ahmed, then 32 years old, was sentenced to 25½ years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder. He is expected to serve the first 15½ years in prison, with the remainder on supervised release. This tragic incident highlights the devastating impact of gun violence and the swift actions taken by law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice.
