On a cold February morning in Saint Paul, Minnesota, a gathering of mourners outside a funeral home was shattered by gunfire, leaving a young man dead and several others wounded. The victim was identified as Agustin Martinez, a 28-year-old Hispanic male from Crystal. The tragic events unfolded on February 21, 2022, around 11:20 a.m. outside the Simple Traditions by Bradshaw funeral home, where services were being held for Casanova Carter, who himself had been a recent victim of gun violence.
What began as a somber occasion quickly devolved into chaos. A fight broke out on the sidewalk in front of the funeral home, escalating with shocking speed. Surveillance footage from the area captured the moments when the altercation turned deadly. Multiple shooters opened fire, sending attendees running for cover. In the hail of bullets, Agustin Martinez was struck in the back. He was rushed to Regions Hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The shooting also left three other men hospitalized, one in critical condition with wounds to his abdomen, back, and legs.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation was launched, and authorities soon identified several individuals believed to be involved in the deadly exchange. Four men were subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the incident. David Nicholas Garcia, 40, Mario Alberto Vega, 30, Bryan Lara-Saavedra, 25, and Jesus Hernandez, 21, faced charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Garcia and Vega also faced additional charges for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The investigation, aided by surveillance video, painted a grim picture of the events that transpired. The footage reportedly showed Lara-Saavedra pulling out a gun and shooting a man in the neck. Garcia, Hernandez, and Vega were also allegedly seen firing their weapons into the crowd as people fled the scene.
