On the morning of October 24, 2022, the life of Nicole Michelle Hammond, a 28-year-old Caucasian woman, was tragically cut short in the parking lot of her workplace in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. Just before their shift was to begin at a local textile factory, Hammond was fatally shot. Responding officers found her near her car with a single gunshot wound to the neck.
The investigation quickly centered on a co-worker, Michael Carpenter, then 36 years old.
Co-workers informed police that Carpenter had made numerous unwanted romantic advances toward Hammond over the previous month, all of which she had repeatedly rejected. The night before the fatal encounter, Hammond had sent text messages to Carpenter, explicitly telling him she did not want to be touched or manipulated by him and asking that he not make things uncomfortable at their shared workplace. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a gunshot and seeing Carpenter walk away from the area and drive off.
Michael Carpenter was arrested later that same day. During a search of his vehicle, police discovered a 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine. The ammunition matched a single shell casing found near Hammond's body. Initially, Carpenter was charged with second-degree murder. However, a grand jury later indicted him on the more severe charge of first-degree premeditated murder.
In August 2024, following a trial, a Benton County jury found Michael Carpenter guilty of both first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree murder. On September 20, 2024, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing the legal chapter of the tragic case to a close and holding him accountable for the murder of Nicole Hammond.
