In the pre-dawn hours of December 3, 2001, a domestic disturbance call shattered the morning quiet in Junction City, Kansas, ultimately leading to the tragic death of Wilson Alex Johnson Jr., a 56-year-old African American male and a veteran police officer. Johnson, known affectionately as "Alex," had served the Junction City Police Department for 18 years as both a patrol officer and a detective, a second career he undertook after a distinguished 20-year tenure in the U.S. Army that included two tours in Vietnam.
The call that fateful morning was to assist a woman in retrieving her two young children from an apartment where they were being held by her domestic partner. Officer Johnson responded to the scene to help the victim. During a tense confrontation inside the apartment, the suspect, identified as Carlos Antioni Cobbs, opened fire, striking Officer Johnson. The wound proved to be fatal, and Johnson died at the scene. His selfless actions, however, were not in vain, as the two children, aged one and three, were ultimately rescued unharmed.
Following the shooting of Officer Johnson, the situation escalated as a backup officer arrived. Cobbs exited the apartment and fired at least one shot at the arriving officer, who was not injured. Faced with the arrival of more law enforcement, Cobbs then retreated back into the apartment. There, he took his own life. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in to handle the investigation into the officer's death and the suspect's apparent suicide. Due to the suspect taking his own life, no arrests were made in connection with the murder of Officer Wilson "Alex" Johnson Jr. He was survived by his wife and two stepsons.
