On September 26, 2008, a grim discovery was made in a residence at 611 S. Second Street in Salina, Kansas. Inside, authorities found the bodies of 22-year-old Earnest J. Jones Jr., a Black male, and Taryn K. Dechant, also 22. Both had been fatally shot. The scene was made even more tragic by the presence of two children, who were fortunately unharmed.
The subsequent investigation into the double homicide led Salina police to two suspects who were known to the victims. Terrence J.
Watson was identified and arrested as the primary suspect in the shootings. Another individual, Anna Louise Hartman, was taken into custody and considered an accomplice in the crime. The motive for the killings was not made clear, though it was suggested that personal relationships may have played a role.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Terrence J. Watson was charged with the murders of Earnest J. Jones Jr. and Taryn K. Dechant. He eventually pleaded no contest to the charges and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Anna Louise Hartman pleaded guilty to her role in the incident and received a 5-year prison sentence for her involvement.
