On a spring afternoon in Kansas City, Kansas, on May 8, 2015, a violent chase tragically cut short the life of 17-year-old Black / African American female, Brayona Hullum. She was a passenger in a maroon Chevrolet Impala, accompanied by her two sisters, Mariah and Ressa Hullum, and their cousin, Robin Osborn. The group was heading out to cash Brayona's paycheck and do some shopping for baby clothes.
Their plans were abruptly shattered when another vehicle began pursuing them, and an occupant started firing gunshots at their car.
In a desperate attempt to escape the gunfire, the driver, Mariah Hullum, sped away. While navigating the streets, she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fence at 27th Street and Wood Avenue. Brayona Hullum was found deceased outside of the car. Her sisters and cousin sustained critical injuries in the crash. Authorities later confirmed that Brayona's death was not the result of a gunshot wound but from the injuries she sustained in the wreck. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department subsequently began investigating her death as a homicide.
Witnesses at the scene provided a description of a suspect, a Black male with dreadlocks and gold teeth, who was seen firing at the vehicle the young women were in. Police were also searching for a white Chevrolet Malibu in connection with the incident. Despite these leads and pleas to the public for information, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been officially identified by law enforcement. The case remains an unsolved homicide, leaving a family searching for answers and a community mourning the loss of a young life.
