Lelyn Paul Betts, a 43-year-old White/Caucasian male, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2015, in Coldwater, Kansas. Born in Garden City, Kansas, on March 10, 1972, he was a member of the Bible Christian Church in his hometown. On the night of his death, at approximately 11:00 pm, the Comanche County Sheriff's Office and the Coldwater Police Department responded to a call concerning a man with a gunshot wound. Upon their arrival, they discovered that Lelyn Betts had been fatally shot.
The investigation that followed involved the Comanche County Sheriff's Office, the Coldwater Police Department, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Over the weekend, law enforcement officials developed information that pointed to Frank D. Asebedo, Jr., a 42-year-old from Protection, Kansas, as the suspect in the shooting. Asebedo was subsequently arrested without incident in Protection.
Frank Domingo Asebedo Jr. was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Lelyn Betts. He was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, as he had previous convictions for aggravated assault. Following his arrest, Asebedo was held in the Ford County Detention Center awaiting his first appearance in Comanche County District Court. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Protection Police Department, the Kiowa County Sheriff's Office, the Ford County Sheriff's Office, the Clark County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism, the Dodge City Police Department, and the Kansas Highway Patrol, assisted in the case.
