In the winter of 2018, the quiet fields of Decatur County, Kansas, became the final resting place for Scott J. Hunter, a 55-year-old Caucasian man from Bellevue, Nebraska. On January 26th of that year, he was discovered deceased inside his vehicle, bringing a somber end to a multi-state law enforcement effort. His death was determined to be the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
At the time of his death, Hunter was the central figure in a grim investigation that had begun months earlier in Nebraska. In October 2017, authorities in Bellevue, alongside the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office, initiated an inquiry into a report of child sexual assault. As their investigation progressed, Scott Hunter was identified as the primary suspect.
The case against him had solidified to the point that on January 24, 2018, just two days before his body was found, the Sarpy County Court issued a warrant for his arrest. The charges were severe, encompassing multiple counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child. Following the issuance of the warrant, a coordinated effort to locate and apprehend Hunter was launched, involving Bellevue police, the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office Warrants Division, and the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force.
The search for Hunter concluded when the Kansas Bureau of Investigation delivered the news that he had been found in Decatur County. With the sole suspect in the sexual assault case deceased, authorities sought no further individuals in connection with his death.
