In the cold of a late January night in Dodge City, Kansas, the life of 18-year-old Zacarias Giannino, a male of Hispanic descent, was cut short. On January 28, 2021, Giannino was fatally wounded by a single gunshot to the head in what police believe transpired in VFW Park. For weeks, his fate remained a mystery, his body concealed in a secluded outdoor area nearby.
The frigid temperatures of the Kansas winter inadvertently preserved his remains, a silent testament to the violence that had occurred.
The grim discovery was not made until nearly two months later, on March 21, 2021. Acting on a tip, Dodge City police were dispatched to the 1200 block of West Elm Street, where they found Giannino's body. The condition of the remains indicated that he had been deceased for a significant period. An autopsy later confirmed his identity and the cause of death, officially launching a homicide investigation, the first in Dodge City since 2018.
The investigation quickly led to four arrests. Tyree Jackson, 19, and Lakendria Lewis, 31, both residents of Dodge City, were taken into custody and faced potential charges of first-degree murder. They were booked into the Ford County Jail. Alongside the adult suspects, two juveniles were also implicated in the crime. A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of interference with law enforcement and criminal desecration, while a 16-year-old girl was apprehended on an active warrant. The arrests brought a swift sense of progress to the case, though the community was left to grapple with the violent end of a young life.
