On the evening of Christmas Eve in 2021, Patricia Ann Panijan, an 85-year-old White female, was tragically killed in her own home in Kansas City, Kansas. She and her husband, Joseph, were watching television together in their front room when a barrage of gunfire erupted outside their residence in the 2900 block of North 73rd Place. More than a dozen bullets penetrated the front of their house, striking both Patricia and her husband.
While her husband was wounded in the attack, Patricia succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The violent and seemingly random nature of the shooting sent shockwaves through their quiet neighborhood and the local Croatian community, where the Panijans were well-known. In the wake of the tragedy, family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil, remembering a woman who was a devoted mother and wife. In an effort to prevent similar tragedies, her family established The Patricia Panijan Crime Prevention Fund.
As of early 2022, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department had not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the homicide. Investigators have, however, sought the public's help in locating a vehicle of interest believed to be connected to the shooting. The vehicle was described as a silver four-door sedan, possibly a 2011 to 2014 Volkswagen Passat or Jetta, without a sunroof. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as they continue to investigate the senseless act of violence that claimed Patricia Panijan's life.
