In the winter of 1969, a tragic event unfolded in a Washington, D.C. apartment building that led to the death of Special Agent Anthony Palmisano. A 27-year-old male, Palmisano was a dedicated agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, having served for one year. On January 8th, he and his partner, Special Agent Edwin Woodriffe, were tasked with a dangerous assignment: to apprehend an escaped federal prisoner.
The man they were pursuing was Billie Austin Bryant, who had recently escaped from Lorton Reformatory where he was serving a lengthy sentence for robbery and assault. Bryant had also been identified as the perpetrator of a bank robbery in Prince George's County, Maryland, just that morning. Acting on a tip, Palmisano, Woodriffe, and a third agent went to an apartment on Yuma Street SE, believed to be the residence of the suspect's ex-wife.
As the agents entered the hallway of the apartment building, they were ambushed by Bryant, who emerged from the apartment and opened fire without warning. Both Special Agent Palmisano and Special Agent Woodriffe were fatally wounded in the sudden and violent attack. The third agent on the scene returned fire, but Bryant managed to escape immediate capture.
Following an intensive manhunt, Billie Austin Bryant was apprehended later that same day. He was subsequently tried and convicted for the murders of both Special Agent Anthony Palmisano and Special Agent Edwin Woodriffe. For his crimes, Bryant received two life sentences in prison, bringing a grim conclusion to the case that had claimed the lives of two brave law enforcement officers.
