In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 1, 2015, the life of 22-year-old Michael Toland was tragically cut short. At approximately 3:32 a.m., in the normally quiet intersection of 46th Place and G Street in Southeast Washington, D.C., Toland was shot. He sustained gunshot wounds to his back and leg. After the shooting, Toland arrived at a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died.
The Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation.
Their efforts led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. On Monday, August 10, 2015, police publicly identified 21-year-old Matin M. Flythe as a person of interest and asked for the public's assistance in locating him, cautioning that he might be armed and dangerous. A warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder.
The search for the suspect came to a resolution just two days later. On Wednesday, August 12, 2015, Matin M. Flythe turned himself in to the authorities. He was formally arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with the death of Michael Toland, bringing a swift, if somber, development to the investigation into a young man's untimely death.
