Do you know who murdered Jamal Crump in 2019? In the late afternoon of a Wednesday in Washington, D.C., a young man's life was cut short in a burst of violence. Twenty-three-year-old Jamal Kwame Crump was in an alley in the Columbia Heights neighborhood on February 27, 2019, when an altercation with three other men took a fatal turn. Surveillance footage from the scene, located in the 1300 block of Monroe Street NW, captured the moments leading up to the shooting.
One of the men involved in the dispute left the scene, only to return shortly after and open fire on Crump.
The incident, which police later described as a targeted killing, occurred at approximately 2:40 p.m. behind a row of houses. Emergency services were called to the scene where they found Crump suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of his life-threatening injuries, but despite all life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
In the days that followed, detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch began an intensive investigation. Their efforts led to a breakthrough on March 7, 2019, when they arrested a 15-year-old male from Northeast, D.C. The juvenile was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder while Armed and Carrying a Pistol Without a License in connection with the death of Jamal Crump. While an arrest was made, authorities continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. The prosecution later extended a plea offer for second-degree murder and carrying a pistol without a license to the suspected juvenile.
