In the early morning hours of July 10, 2016, Seth Conrad Rich, a 27-year-old male employee of the Democratic National Committee, was shot and killed in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D.C. He was walking home and was on the phone with his girlfriend at approximately 4:19 a.m. when the call abruptly ended. Police were alerted to the sound of gunfire by an automated detection system and found Rich conscious but with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died about an hour and a half later.
Investigators believe the killing may have been the result of a botched robbery, a theory supported by a recent string of robberies in the area. However, Rich's wallet, watch, and phone were not taken from him, which has led to questions about the motive. An examination of his body showed signs of a struggle, with bruises on his hands, knees, and face, in addition to two gunshot wounds to his back.
