In the cold of a December evening in Washington, D.C., a young life was tragically cut short over a pair of basketball shoes. Seventeen-year-old James Anthony Smith, a student at Ballou High School, was shot and killed on a basketball court at the Frederick Douglass Community Center in Southeast Washington. The fatal encounter, which occurred on December 18, 2017, was believed to be a robbery for the new Nike Air Jordan sneakers he had received as an early Christmas present from his mother.
Responding to reports of a shooting, police found Smith unconscious and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His cherished red sneakers were missing.
The investigation into the death of the young man, described by his mother as a good kid who loved basketball and video games, led police to a suspect several months later. In March 2018, the Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of a 16-year-old male from Southeast D.C. The teen was charged with felony murder in connection with Smith's death. Due to the suspect's age, his name was not publicly released. The arrest brought a measure of hope for justice to a grieving family and community stunned by the senseless violence.
The case against the teenage suspect proceeded through the D.C. Superior Court. During a two-week trial in the summer of 2018, prosecutors presented testimony from three teenage witnesses who were friends of Smith. They told the court they saw the defendant confront Smith and demand his shoes before chasing him. Although they did not witness the shooting itself, they heard the gunshots and later saw the suspect with Smith's stolen sneakers. The defense challenged the credibility of the witnesses, suggesting their testimony was coerced. Ultimately, a judge found the 16-year-old guilty of second-degree murder, robbery, and other offenses in the fatal shooting of James Anthony Smith.
