In the summer of 2020, Keith Johnson, a 44-year-old Black man from Washington, D.C., vanished under what police would come to describe as suspicious circumstances. He was last seen on July 15, 2020, in the 1800 block of Tobias Drive, SE. Concern for his welfare grew when his vehicle was discovered abandoned in the 3700 block of D Street, SE, containing a significant amount of blood inside.
This grim discovery prompted a search of the surrounding areas, including Anacostia Park, but yielded no immediate answers as to his whereabouts. For months, his disappearance remained a painful mystery for his family and community.
The case took a somber turn on February 6, 2021, when skeletal remains were discovered in the 3600 block of F Street, SE. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later confirmed the remains belonged to Keith Johnson. An autopsy revealed that he had died from a gunshot wound, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. The discovery of his remains, months after he was last seen, brought a heartbreaking conclusion to the search for the missing man and opened a new chapter in the quest for justice.
In the wake of this discovery, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation.
