In the fall of 2021, a young man named Zachary Freeling, 26, was found deceased in the foyer of his Washington, D.C. home, the last surviving member of his immediate family. On the evening of October 18th, his roommate discovered him unconscious and alerted the authorities. The D.C. medical examiner’s office ruled the manner of his death as “undetermined.” This ambiguous finding left the door open to the possibility of suicide, a conclusion that his family vehemently rejected. They pointed to the unusual location of the wound for a self-inflicted injury and insisted that Zachary, despite having endured the past suicides of his father and brother and his mother's death from cancer, was looking forward to the future. He was on the cusp of realizing a dream he had long nurtured: opening a food truck, a venture his late mentor had encouraged. His family was so certain of foul play that they hired their own team of private investigators to delve into the case.
For nearly three years, Zachary's aunt and uncle tirelessly advocated for him, persistently communicating with the medical examiner's office and law enforcement, pushing for a re-evaluation of the evidence. Their efforts were finally validated in June of 2024 when the chief medical examiner officially reclassified Zachary Freeling's death as a homicide.
