In the bright light of a Tuesday afternoon in Washington, D.C., a 37-year-old woman named Nikia Young was walking near the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and 23rd Street Southeast. It was March 15, 2022, and the day was about to take a tragic and violent turn. As she and another person were crossing the street, a man approached them in the crosswalk and, without warning, opened fire at close range. The gunman fired seven shots, striking Young five times in her face, chest, and hip.
