In the bright light of a Tuesday afternoon in Washington, D.C., a 37-year-old woman named Nikia Young was walking near the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and 23rd Street Southeast. It was March 15, 2022, and the day was about to take a tragic and violent turn. As she and another person were crossing the street, a man approached them in the crosswalk and, without warning, opened fire at close range.
The gunman fired seven shots, striking Young five times in her face, chest, and hip.
The brazen midday attack left Nikia Young with life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders rushed her to a nearby hospital, but her wounds proved to be fatal. The shooter fled the scene on foot, managing to catch the same Metro bus he had exited just moments before the fatal encounter. The search for the person responsible for this public execution began immediately, with homicide detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department leading the investigation.
The suspect was identified as Johnwann Elliott. At the time of the shooting, Elliott was already on supervised release for a prior robbery conviction and was also pending trial for unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was arrested on May 19, 2022, found inside a hotel in Northeast Washington, D.C. The motive for the killing appeared to stem from an accusation that Young had stolen a handgun from Elliott's home. According to a witness, Young had taken the firearm after she saw him wave it toward her head. Elliott had reportedly complained to others about the stolen gun and was later quoted by a witness as saying, 'That d*** b**** had to get it.'
In December 2024, Johnwann Elliott, then 31, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed and attempted assault with a dangerous weapon. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. His sentencing was scheduled for March 14, 2025, nearly two years to the day after he ended Nikia Young's life in a shocking act of violence on a city street.
