On the evening of March 30, 2011, Michael Portaro, a 22-year-old White/Caucasian male, was in the parking lot of the Tenaya Creek Brewery in Las Vegas, Nevada. An aspiring hip-hop artist known as "Mikey P," he was there selling tickets for an upcoming performance by his group, Ekoh. A former high school quarterback and a beloved son, Portaro was pursuing his passion for music with the full support of his family.
His life was cut short when he was shot multiple times and killed in what police would later describe as a tragic and unnecessary act of violence, a crime of opportunity where an innocent victim was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The investigation into the homicide baffled detectives for nearly three months, with few leads and no immediate witnesses to the shooting itself. Investigators found that Portaro's car had been stolen from the scene. A key piece of evidence was discovered underneath his body: a half-smoked cigarette. Surveillance footage from the brewery showed a man walking in the area, smoking a cigarette just before the shooting. This seemingly insignificant item would prove to be the "smoking gun" that ultimately led detectives to the killer. The cigarette was collected and tested for DNA.
Police identified a suspect, Brandon Javon Hill, who was 22 at the time. Hill was already in custody at the Clark County Detention Center, having been arrested on May 19, 2011, for an unrelated robbery that occurred just four days before Portaro's death. A buccal swab was taken from Hill after his May arrest, and his DNA was a perfect match to the DNA found on the cigarette butt from the murder scene. Further investigation tied Hill directly to the crime through additional forensic evidence. The firearm used in the slaying was recovered from Hill during a separate arrest on April 10, Portaro's blood was found on Hill's shoes, and other evidence was discovered inside Portaro's stolen vehicle.
Brandon Hill was charged with murder with a deadly weapon, robbery, and grand larceny. He was convicted, and although prosecutors initially sought the death penalty, Michael Portaro's mother, Cynthia, asked them to withdraw it, stating she did not want to see another person die. Following her request, a judge sentenced Hill to serve 28 years to life in prison.
