In the pre-dawn hours of August 10, 2015, the quiet of an east Las Vegas apartment complex was shattered by the sound of a dozen gunshots. As the sun began to rise over the Hamptons Apartment Complex on South Nellis Boulevard, a grim discovery was made in the back parking lot. Two men lay dead, apparent victims of a brutal shooting. One of the men was identified as 31-year-old Hispanic male Fernando Omar Avila-Estrada. He was found to have died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
The second victim was also a Hispanic man, later identified as Luis Villafana-Ibarria.
The scene told a chilling story to the arriving Metro officers. It appeared that both Avila-Estrada and Villafana-Ibarria were unarmed when they were shot. One man was found lying next to a sedan, while the other seemed to have been shot as he tried to flee. Investigators at the time did not believe the killings were gang-related, but they considered the possibility of a robbery or a drug deal that had taken a violent turn. The nature of the crime led to descriptions of the incident as an execution-style double murder. The residence of Avila-Estrada was not known at the time.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the identification of two suspects. Warrants were issued for 20-year-old Adolfo Rodriguez and 26-year-old Francisco Acosta. In March of the following year, Rodriguez was arrested during a traffic stop where he initially provided false information to the officers. He was subsequently booked at the Clark County Detention Center. Acosta was already in federal custody on unrelated charges at the time the warrants were issued. Both men faced serious charges for their alleged involvement in the deaths of Avila-Estrada and Villafana-Ibarria, including two counts of murder, two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, and one count each of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit robbery.
