In a tragic turn of events on August 25, 2016, a 37-year-old Hispanic male, David Medina, was shot and killed in North Las Vegas, Nevada. The incident unfolded on the 2600 block of Glory View Lane, near West Carey Avenue and Simmons Street, stemming from what was arranged as a minor drug transaction.
According to Medina's girlfriend, who was present at the scene, he had arranged online to sell a small quantity of marijuana.
She recounted to police that after they parked in a driveway, two females entered the back seat of their vehicle. Shortly after, a man, later identified as Jeremiah Grant-June, who was 18 at the time, opened the passenger door and attempted to steal her purse. As she struggled with him, Medina began to drive away. It was at this moment that a gunshot rang out.
Medina was struck in the head by the bullet. His girlfriend tried to gain control of the vehicle to prevent a crash, but they ultimately collided with a parked car. Emergency services were called, and Medina was transported to University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Investigators at the scene recovered a handgun, a hair pick, and a crucial piece of evidence: a cell phone. The cell phone was discovered to belong to Grant-June, and further forensic analysis revealed his DNA on both the gun and the hair pick. Text messages on the phone from the day before the shooting indicated a premeditated plan to commit a robbery, with one message reading, "Let's rob these drug dealers".
Nearly three years after the fatal shooting, in September 2019, Jeremiah Grant-June, then 21, was arrested in connection with David Medina's death. He was charged with one count of murder with a deadly weapon and two counts of attempted robbery with a deadly weapon. North Las Vegas police confirmed that Grant-June was the sole suspect in the case.
