On the evening of March 4, 2017, a tragedy unfolded in Las Vegas that ended the life of 42-year-old Black / African American male, Dionne Sherfield. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. outside an apartment building located at 817 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Sherfield was standing outside when he was struck by multiple gunshots. The sound of gunfire shattered the night, and a dark-colored SUV with large rims was seen speeding away from the area immediately following the shooting.
When
officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Sherfield unresponsive and not breathing. Emergency medical services were dispatched, and he was rushed to University Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Dionne Sherfield succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead in the early hours of the following morning, just after 1:30 a.m. The Clark County coroner's office later officially ruled his death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. He was a father to two children and was engaged to be married to his fiancée, Cennie Green.
The investigation into Sherfield's murder, the 28th homicide investigated by Metro that year, led police to identify a suspect. On April 7, 2017, just over a month after the fatal shooting, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrested 27-year-old Gervonn McCurdy in connection with the crime. McCurdy was identified as the primary suspect in the shooting death of Dionne Sherfield, bringing a measure of progress to an investigation that had left a family grieving and a community searching for answers.
