In the winter of 2018, a dispute over the volume of music tragically cut short the life of a 35-year-old Black man, Jamar Jermaine Taylor. The fatal encounter unfolded on January 16th in the parking lot of the Kensington Suites, a long-term rental property on West Bonanza Road in Las Vegas, Nevada. On that Tuesday, Taylor was enjoying music from his vehicle, a simple act that would unexpectedly lead to a violent confrontation.

Stathakos, had reportedly been complaining about loud music in the days leading up to the incident. Witnesses later recalled hearing Stathakos "rant and rave" about his frustration and proclaim that he would "handle the next person who came into the complex" playing loud music. On that fateful day, Stathakos confronted Taylor about the music, though Taylor appeared confused by the man's anger.
The argument quickly escalated, with Stathakos brandishing a handgun and opening fire on Taylor. As Taylor tried to flee, Stathakos pursued him, continuing to shoot until Taylor collapsed to the ground. A security guard at the complex intervened, disarming Stathakos and instructing him to return to his apartment while awaiting the arrival of law enforcement. Taylor was rushed to University Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers detained Stathakos at his apartment. He was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. In the days that followed, family and friends gathered for a vigil to remember Jamar Taylor, lighting candles and sharing memories of a life taken too soon over a senseless argument.
