On the evening of February 11, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada, a young Black/African American man named Kenyon Tyler, aged 26, was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. on the 2600 block of Van Patten Street, near Sahara Avenue and Paradise Road. Police believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation over a drug sale and had connections to gang activity. Tyler was discovered on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries during surgery at approximately 11:15 p.m.
While investigators were at the scene of the shooting, they heard more gunfire erupt about a block away around 10:40 p.m. This second shooting, which occurred on the 2500 block of Sherwood Street, resulted in another man being shot at least once. He was expected to survive his injuries. Authorities stated that the two shootings appeared to be related, with the second possibly being a retaliatory act. They believed, however, that different shooters were involved in each incident.
Following an investigation into Kenyon Tyler's death, police arrested 29-year-old Deandre Terelle Gathrite. He was taken into custody and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. According to reports, Tyler and Gathrite were members of rival gangs and had engaged in an argument prior to the shooting. During their investigation, police recovered a handgun from Gathrite's apartment that matched the shell casings found at the scene of Tyler's death. A witness also identified Gathrite as the shooter in a photo lineup. Gathrite, a four-time felon with a criminal history that includes charges of kidnapping and attempted murder, also faced an additional charge for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
