On his 48th birthday, July 22, 2019, Leroy "Smurf" Lucero, a Hispanic male, had spent the day with his family fishing and barbecuing at a lake. Later that evening, after returning to his home in a trailer park near Mills Avenue and Hot Springs Boulevard in Las Vegas, he settled in to watch a movie. The quiet of the evening was broken around 11:30 p.m. by the sound of a car horn in his driveway. This was followed by shouting and then the distinct sound of gunshots.
