On July 1, 2021, Abraham Acosta, a 32-year-old man, was fatally shot in a violent incident that was part of a three-day string of robberies and shootings in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada. The suspect linked to Acosta's death, as well as two other homicides, is John Anthony Carrillo, a 29-year-old man from California.
Carrillo's crime spree began on June 29, 2021, and involved multiple violent incidents.
On the morning of July 1, 2021, Carrillo shot and killed Ruben Garcia, 36, at a home near Oakey Boulevard and Eastern Avenue in Las Vegas. Later that day, around 12 hours after Garcia's killing, Carrillo fatally shot Abraham Acosta at a 7-Eleven gas station located near Silverado Ranch Boulevard and Maryland Parkway in Henderson.
The details of Acosta's death are particularly disturbing. According to video surveillance footage, Acosta approached Carrillo, who was in the driver's seat of a Nissan Altima that he had taken from Garcia earlier. The footage showed Acosta apparently providing a lighter for a cigarette to Carrillo when suddenly, Carrillo shot Acosta in the face and then drove away in the Nissan.
Carrillo was arrested following this series of violent crimes and was subsequently linked to a third homicide, that of Miles Smith, 55, who was found dead in an apartment near Charleston Boulevard and Eastern Avenue. Investigators believe that Smith was killed before the two fatal shootings on July 1, although the exact timing of his death was unclear.
Carrillo's arrest was the culmination of a thorough investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department. He was charged with multiple felonies, including three counts of murder for the deaths of Acosta, Garcia, and Smith. Additionally, he faces charges of robbery, attempted robbery, burglary, kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon. Carrillo had a history of violent behavior, having been released earlier in the year from a California prison where he served time for assault with force likely to cause bodily injury. He was also suspected of stabbing his father in Gilroy, California, prior to the crimes in Southern Nevada.
During his arrest, Carrillo told police officers that he had smoked methamphetamine, which investigators believe played a role in the unprovoked shootings. He was denied bail and held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center. Clark County prosecutors later announced that they would seek the death penalty for Carrillo, citing the random and motiveless nature of the killings and his prior violent felony convictions.
