On October 28, 2021, a fatal shooting occurred outside a 7-Eleven convenience store located at 1415 E. Fremont Street, near 15th Street, in downtown Las Vegas. The victim, identified as Devin Anderson, a 22-year-old resident of North Las Vegas, died from a gunshot wound to the head and neck, as confirmed by the Clark County coroner's office. The incident was reported to the police at approximately 9:45 p.m.
The events leading to Anderson's death involved a quarrel between him and another
man, later identified as Rudy Becerril, 45. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, both men arrived at the convenience store in separate vehicles about 10 minutes before the shooting. They exchanged words in the parking lot, which escalated into a confrontation. Becerril pulled out a gun and pointed it at Anderson, who also drew a gun. Anderson was shot after he pointed his gun at Becerril. As Anderson lay wounded, Becerril further assaulted him by pistol-whipping him.
Anderson was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The critical piece of evidence that led to the identification and arrest of the suspect came from Anderson's girlfriend, who took photos of the vehicle in which Becerril and a woman accompanying him fled the scene. The photos included the license plate number of their Nissan Rogue. Using this information, police tracked down the vehicle to a southwest Las Vegas address and arrested Becerril less than two hours after the shooting.
Rudy Becerril was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a murder charge and on a warrant for being an out-of-state fugitive. Initially, Becerril refused to identify himself, which delayed his naming by the authorities. He is being held without bail and was scheduled to appear in court.
The investigation, supported by surveillance video from the 7-Eleven, detailed the sequence of events and confirmed that the shooting was a result of the altercation between Becerril and Anderson. The case highlights the swift action taken by the police in using the photos provided by Anderson's girlfriend to apprehend the suspect.
