In the early morning hours of November 14, 2021, a fatal encounter unfolded in a Las Vegas parking lot, leaving a young man dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was identified as Jacob Hughey, a 28-year-old Caucasian male from North Las Vegas. The incident, which was ruled a homicide by the Clark County coroner's office, stemmed from what was described as a chance encounter that tragically escalated.
The events leading to Hughey's death began outside a tavern located on South
Grand Canyon Drive. An argument erupted between Hughey and another man in the parking lot. The verbal dispute quickly turned physical, culminating in the other individual producing a firearm and shooting Hughey. When Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 3:29 a.m., they found Hughey suffering from gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators were aided in their efforts by crucial video evidence. Surveillance footage from the establishment captured the altercation, and remarkably, Hughey’s own cell phone was still recording when officers found him, providing a direct view of the events, including the face of the shooter. This evidence led to the identification and arrest of a suspect four days after the shooting.
The suspect was named as 21-year-old Launce Cliff. He was subsequently charged with open murder and carrying a weapon without a permit. Details from the investigation indicated that Cliff shot Hughey four times—once in the face and three times in the back—after Hughey had punched him during their confrontation. Cliff then fled the scene in his vehicle before first responders arrived. During a subsequent bail hearing, his attorney argued for self-defense.
