In the late afternoon of November 29, 2021, a dispute between coworkers at a residential pool refurbishment project in Las Vegas would end in tragedy for 30-year-old Garey Flores. Flores, a Hispanic male, was working on a pool at a home on the 2800 block of Alcoa Avenue, near West Sahara Avenue, alongside Kevin Ortiz Martinez and his brother, Oscar Ortiz, under the employment of their father, Pablo Ortiz Martinez.
The father had tasked his sons and Flores with the pool job.
At some point during the day, he sent his son Oscar to another job site. Later, around 4 p.m., he asked Oscar to return to the Alcoa Avenue location to pick up some tools. When Oscar arrived, he discovered Flores lying alone and unconscious inside the pool with a significant head injury.
Following the discovery, Pablo Ortiz Martinez contacted his other son, Kevin Ortiz Martinez, and urged him to confess to what had happened. Kevin eventually returned to the scene and surrendered to law enforcement. He admitted to police that he and Flores had argued and fought, which made him angry. However, he declined to provide a formal statement without an attorney present.
Garey Flores was transported to University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head on December 5, 2021. Kevin Ortiz Martinez was arrested on November 29 and initially booked on a charge of battery resulting in substantial bodily harm. He was later accused of murder following Flores's death.
