On New Year's Eve of 2021, a night of celebration in Las Vegas turned tragic for Hyo Sup Um, a 60-year-old Asian man. In the parking garage of the Palace Station casino, what began as a suspected robbery attempt escalated into a fatal encounter. Um was shot in the back and was later pronounced dead at University Medical Center. His death was officially ruled a homicide by the Clark County coroner's office.
The investigation into the shooting led police to two young men, 18-year-old Jordan Ruby and 20-year-old Jesani Carter. Authorities quickly linked them to another deadly shooting that occurred earlier the same day in the parking garage of the Fashion Show mall on the Las Vegas Strip. In that incident, 66-year-old Clarice Yamaguchi from Hawaii was killed. Investigators believe that after a failed robbery attempt on an employee in the Palace Station garage, the suspects turned their attention to Um.
Ruby and Carter were apprehended the following day, on January 1, 2022. They faced serious charges for their alleged roles in the deadly crime spree, including murder, attempted robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery for both incidents. Following their arrest, both men were held in custody pending further legal proceedings.
