In the pre-dawn hours of March 12, 2022, 18-year-old Naomi Irion, a White female, sat in her car in the parking lot of a Walmart in Fernley, Nevada. She was waiting for a shuttle to her job at a Panasonic factory, a routine part of her day. Surveillance footage captured a man approaching her vehicle at approximately 5:24 a.m. and getting inside. A minute later, her car was seen driving away with the unknown man at the wheel. This was the last time Naomi was seen alive.
Her car was discovered abandoned three days later less than a mile away, but there was no sign of Naomi.
The search for the missing teenager drew widespread attention. Her family, including her brother who first reported her missing, pleaded for her safe return. The investigation led law enforcement to identify a suspect, Troy Driver, a 41-year-old resident of Fallon, Nevada. Driver was arrested on March 25, 2022, initially on charges of kidnapping. A crucial tip eventually led investigators to a remote gravesite in rural Churchill County. There, on March 29, 2022, they discovered Naomi Irion's body. An autopsy later confirmed she had died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and her death was ruled a homicide.
Following the discovery of Naomi's body, the charges against Troy Driver were upgraded to include first-degree murder, robbery, burglary of a motor vehicle, and destruction of evidence. Later, a charge of sexual assault was added, with prosecutors alleging he had raped her before the murder. Investigators found overwhelming evidence linking Driver to the crime, including his DNA on Naomi's body. They determined that there was no prior connection between Driver and Irion and that he had stalked her in the parking lot before abducting her. Driver had a significant criminal history, including a conviction for being an accomplice to a murder at the age of 17.
Before he could stand trial for Naomi Irion's murder, Troy Driver was found dead in his jail cell in August 2023. His death was ruled a suicide by asphyxiation. In a note he left behind, he alluded to a "darkness within" himself. While his death meant he would never face a jury for his crimes against Naomi, law enforcement officials stated that the evidence against him was insurmountable and left no doubt as to his guilt.
