The events leading to his death began on April 17, 1974, at the Brown Jug Liquor Store on East Cucharras Street. An altercation had broken out earlier in the evening, involving Mr. Gambles's brother and another man.
Following the initial confrontation, Mr. Gambles, accompanied by his brother and nephew, left the location.
However, they later returned to the liquor store to make a purchase. As the three men were outside the establishment, shots were suddenly fired. All three were struck by the gunfire.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Virgil Delano Gambles was rushed to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. His brother and nephew were also injured in the shooting.
