On the evening of April 1, 1980, Denver Police Department officers responded to a call at Mario's Transmission, an auto repair shop located near the intersection of West 44th Avenue and Clay Street in Denver, Colorado. Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of 23-year-old Frank Lopez and his stepfather, Mario Horta; both had been fatally shot.
